“DROP-OFF, PICK-UP” & BUS SAFETY
If your child discovers that he/she is on the wrong bus once the bus is moving, please instruct him/her to STAY ON THE BUS and tell the driver.

For those students being picked up – if they are outside and no one picks them up as planned, they should come back into the office.

Before and after school when picking up or dropping off your children please use the crosswalk, we have teachers volunteering to man them for you and your children’s safety.

When parking your vehicle, please use the street unless you are a staff member or a volunteer and there is a parking space available for you in the lot.

Do not park where you see a yellow curb marking; they are painted yellow to provide a safe distance from your vehicle and the crosswalk user.  This distance enables the cross-walk user to check for oncoming traffic, and the drivers to see the crosswalk user.

It is illegal to park in front of someone’s driveway or to double park on the street.  The police will be called and tickets will be written for any car that is blocking a driveway or that is parked in yellow “no parking zones”.

We have provided a drop off lane in the morning, designated by orange cones.  Please use this lane when dropping your child off, and not coming into the school.

Please do not block our neighbors’ driveways when you come to drop off your children in the mornings.
PARENT SAFETY TIP
Parents:  You should always have a plan for your children in case they are not following the normal routine for leaving school. If they are not following the normal routine you must notify the office of the change.  Students will not be dismissed to anyone that is not listed on the parent contact form unless we have been notified by the parent/guardian.  They will be required to provide I.D. when they pick up your child. It is also a good idea to have a “code word” in case someone different is going to pick them up.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

ABSENCES    Please call in before 9:30 am if your child will be absent.  The number is 303-772-7240.  If you don’t call, your student’s absence WILL NOT be excused.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
ABSENT AND TARDY POLICIES
The school district has adopted a new attendance policy effective this 2011-2012 school year.

  • Doctors’ notes will be required for extended absences or illness-related tardies. After 12 absences in a year, a doctor’s note must be submitted to school with every absence after that.

  • Please note that 3 unexcused tardies (leaving school early is considered a tardy) equals a half day unexcused absence.
  • Things such as “sleeping in late”, “had trouble getting dressed”, “didn’t feel like going to school” “extended vacations” etc. will be counted as unexcused.

  • The following dates for school breaks will be strictly enforced. Any additional dates taken will be considered “unexcused absences”.

Thanksgiving Break            Nov 21 – Nov 25
             Winter Break                     Dec 19 – Jan 3
             Spring Break                    Mar 26 – Mar 30

  • The new policy involves the truancy officer very early on and will most likely include going to court.  An attendance plan is established at the court date and the court can issue a “bench warrant” for your arrest if a parent does not fully abide by this agreement.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

SCHOOL HOURS 9:05am–3:40 pm
The beginning and end of the school day are very important times for students to obtain and review information.   Please avoid taking your student out of school early; and of course, make sure they arrive at school on time.

Upon arriving, students will line-up with their classes, and wait for their teacher to take them to class.  Remind your child that he/she will not be playing before school.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Each year hundreds of articles of clothing are left in the Lost and Found.  These clothes are hung on hangers outside the cafeteria, and are very easy to look through if your child is missing something!  REMEMBER:  always put your child’s name in their clothing!

STUDENT CELL PHONE RESTRICTIONS
For the safety and security of our students, we are requesting that cell phones and other electronic devices be left at home; they are a distraction and pose a safety hazard to our school community.  Should a parent need to urgently contact a student during the school day, the office staff can provide assistance, (303) 772-7240. If you feel your child must carry a cell phone, the following restrictions will be strictly enforced… with NO EXCEPTIONS:

  • Cell phones are NOT to be Seen or Used (turned on in any fashion) on school property.  This includes before and after school– and On The Bus.
  • If a cell phone is seen, heard or used during the school day, or on the bus, it WILL be confiscated by staff members (“forgetting” to turn off the cell phone is not an excuse).
  • A confiscated cell phone will only be returned to a parent or guardian at a meeting with the Principal, with the student present.
  • Repeat offenders will face additional consequences
  • Indian Peaks Elementary is not responsible for electronic devices that are lost or stolen.

APPROPRIATE DRESS AND HAIR
Students are required to dress in a manner which:

  • will protect their health and safety
  • will not interfere with their work
  • will not create school disruptions

* Tops must have a minimum of 2-finger width straps
& must fully cover the stomach, back & chest.
*Shorts must come below the fingertips,
  while standing straight.
*No flip-flops are allowed on PE days
*No colored hair is allowed
*Mohawks or spiked hair must be no higher than
 2 inches

If students are in dress code violation and the health office doesn’t have anything for them to wear, parents will be required to bring clothing. If a student habitually violates dress code a discipline report will be written and parents will be notified
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

BIRTHDAY TREATS
If YOU WISH TO celebrate your child’s birthday with special treats at school, please send a note to the teacher at least two (2) days in advance requesting this.  The teacher will then reply with the number of students in the class, the best time to celebrate, and any restrictions.

PBS: Positive Behavior Support

Indian Peaks works hard to ensure your child’s safety.  Because of this commitment to safety and teaching and maintaining positive behaviors, Indian Peaks will continue with its Positive Behavior Support (PBS) program.  You may see a moose stamp on your child’s hand or they may tell you about a “blue or yellow moose” they received which could win them a prize during a school wide drawing on Fridays.  This is because they were caught being good – following the rules, behaving in kind ways, or following one of the P.E.A.K.S norms.  Here at IP we are always encouraging our students to reach for the P.E.A.K.S, which means they will demonstrate Pride, Excellence, Achievement, Kindness, and Safety in their academics or with their behaviors.  Be sure to ask your child(ren) about reaching for the P.E.A.K.S and congratulate them when they get caught being goodJ
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

PARENTS ENTERING THE SCHOOL BUILDING

Parents must enter the school building through the front doors at all times.  In addition, parents who bring their student inside the building (even at the beginning of the day) may not walk their students to class.  “Good-byes” should be exchanged before the student leaves the front office area.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

PARENTS REQUIRED TO SIGN-IN STUDENTS
Any student who is late arriving to school (after 9:05 am), or is leaving or entering the school for any reason during the school day, must have an adult sign the white “Student Sign-In Book” located on the front office desk.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
FROM THE HEALTH OFFICE

Health Clerk: The school is staffed with a Health Clerk, Anne Rose, to assist sick and injured students and those children needing medications.  The Health Clerk IS NOT a NURSE; however, she is supervised by a District Nurse.

Medications at School
NO medications may be given at school without a doctor’s written permission (this includes “over the counter” and homeopathic).  If your child needs medication at school, please contact the office for the required paperwork. Students may bring the following to school with parent permission – and for personal use only

 *Cough drops for colds.
Younger students should give their cough drops
to the teacher for dispensing as needed.
  *Lip Balm/Chap Stick                   *Lotion
  *Contact Wetting Solution           *Sun Screen
Guidelines For Keeping Your Student Home
Keep your student home if she/he has any of the following:

- Fever, vomiting, or diarrhea: Your student should remain home for 24 hours after symptoms end.

- Colds/respiratory viruses: Keep your student home at the beginning of a cold. When she/he feels better and no longer has a persistent cough, they may return to school.

- Strep Throat: Your student may return to school after taking the antibiotic for 24 hours, and free of symptoms.

- Chicken Pox: Your student should stay home until there are no new lesions and all existing lesions have scabbed over (typically 10 days).

- Pink eye: Any eye infection must be treated by a physician before the student returns to school. If antibiotic therapy is prescribed, the student must remain home for at least 24 hours after treatment has begun, and must be free of eye drainage.

- Open sores on skin: All skin lesions must be covered by a bandage or clothing during the school day. This may include impetigo, ring worm, scabies, and other fungal, bacterial or viral skin infections.

- Generalized skin rash: Any student with an undiagnosed skin rash must be seen by a physician for diagnosis and/or treatment before returning to school with a note from the health care provider.

- Head lice: Your student may return to school only after treatment with lice shampoo.

A student will be sent home from school if she/he has any of the above conditions and/or has a temperature of 100.4 degrees F. or more.
